The Doors - "The Wasp (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)" - Song of the Day - 6/3/15

From Left To Right: Robbie Kreiger, Ray Manzarek, John Densmore, Jim Morrison

"Texas Radio" refers to high power Mexican radio stations that blasted into Texas in the 1950s. Not restricted by American regulations these stations, whose call letters started with X, could have up to 150,000 watts. Morrison wrote the lyrics years before this was recorded, and used to perform it as a poem.

Apparently, according to unverified sources, "The verse, "Comes out of the Virginia swamps cool and slow with plenty of precision with a back beat narrow and hard to master" is most likely a reference to Morrison's first real experience with the music scene. From 1958 to 1960 Morrison lived in Alexandria, Virginia and frequented the Juke Joints (blues clubs) on Route 1 just north of Fort Belvoir where Black Blues musicians would play on Friday and Saturday nights. That area where the Juke Joints used to be is right on the eastern edge of a swamp."

Either way, we love this damn song.

Dispatch - "The General" - Song of the Day - 5/27/15

Dispatch

Dispatch formed in 1996 in Vermont and gained a considerable amount of fame before taking a hiatus in 2002. They came back "for good" in 2011, playing periodic shows between that time span, and is currently working on their 6th studio album.

On January 1, 2015, Dispatch announced that they would be playing a benefit show on July 11, 2015 at Madison Square Garden in New York City to shine light on the issue of hunger in America. DISPATCH:HUNGER is set to be the only show in North America in 2015, and $1 from every ticket sold will go directly to starving Americans. John Butler Trio is slated to guest at the benefit concert.

Due to increased demand, on January 20, 2015, Dispatch announced that they would be adding a second night to their DISPATCH:HUNGER show, set for Friday, July 10, 2015 at Madison Square Garden. Dr. Dog is slated to guest at the concert.

The audio on this video isn't all too great, but it's pretty entertaining nonetheless. Hope you enjoy this song as much as we do :)

MS MR - "Hurricane" - Song of the Day - 4/1/15

"Hurricane" was originally released as a single in 2010. It was then included on their 2012 EP, Candy Bar Creep Show. Finally, it was the first track on their 2013 album, Secondhand Rapture. Regardless of how many times they put this track on a release it will never get old. Especially with a music video like this.

Big Gigantic's "Touch the Sky" - Song of the Day [2/6/2014]

With the release of Big Gigantic's new album just days away, we thought a little taste would be a good thing.  Here is the brand new video for "Touch the Sky", aka Track #4 from "The Night is Young" which officially drops on Tuesday 2/11.  They launch their supporting tour the next day in Sioux Falls, SD.

We've had a chance to listen to an early release version of the album.  A blend of familiar BigG sound, along with a few tracks that diverge from what we expect from them, we are still digesting the album as a whole. We can't wait to hear what you think.

For a chance to win a pair of tix to the MPLS show on Valentine's Day, check out the #BigGigianticLove contest going on over at MNUnderground.com

Griz's "Hard Times" - Song of the Day [10/15/2013]

At just 23 years old, Detroit native Grant Kwiecinski (aka GRiZ) is more than your average DJ.  He's also a producer and classically-trained saxophone player who is reinventing electronic music with his funky, sax-infused sounds.  With his second full length album "Rebel Era" due out in a matter of days, GRiZ just unleashed the album's lead single and accompanying video,  "Hard Times".

For those that want more Griz, and only Live Griz will do, you are in luck.  His "Rebel Era" tour is underway and coming to a dancefloor near you...  Can anyone say Minneapolis next week?  I can :)
