Pink Floyd - "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" - Song of the Day [12/28/13]

Today's Song of the Day comes from a band that needs no introduction: Pink Floyd; known as the godfathers of psychedelic rock and an inspiration for many electronic artists today. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun is a song off their album 'A Saucerful Of Secrets', an album that is unknown to many, including Pink Floyd fans. Unlike their more well recognized works Dark Side Of The Sun and The Wall which contain very obvious overall themes, A Saucerful of Secrets is an LP that contains tunes that are less emotional but ever more hypnotic and meditative. Starting with a very mellow guitar riff and some high frequency xylophone notes, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun provides a very eerie and almost fearful tone. Definitely the most meditative off the LP because of its minimalistic and repetitive structure, the tune induces a very heavy trance state in the listener. Be warned, this one is not for the faint of heart, but in its essence it is a work of art.

Parade of Lasers @ City Hall in Denver (12-21-13) [Review]

A Review By: Justin D'Amico

Last Saturday was a very bright night for City Hall in Denver. Crowdsurf Concerts put on a huge laser light show for the first ever Parade of Lasers. After a rush of ticket sales at the door the show would eventually sell out. Crowdsurf Concerts does a great job of branding the events with catchy names, like Foam Wonderland, Trapfest, and Apocalectro. Parade of Lasers is sure to be the next branded event from Crowdsurf Concerts.

City Hall is a very unique venue in downtown Denver. The building has two seperate rooms, perfect for events with a second stage. The main room is very tall with 2 tiers of balconies wrapping around the outside of the room. the middle floor balcony transitions between the two concert rooms and the secondary stage is setup on this middle floor, above and beside the main room. In the secondary room you can actually look into the main room, and sliding garage type doors can be opened to combine the two rooms. What really makes the venue one of a kind is the retractable roof in the main room. When the weather is appropriate the ceiling can be opened for ventilation, but this has to be carefully coordinated with noise ordinances. City Hall holds about 2000 people at capacity with all areas opened.

The show would open doors at 7 and local talent would get things going. The second stage featured, EKG, Xenology, Dirty Little Thieves, Tangle, Mr Audity v Deoxy, and Hardphonix v Tonegenerator. The second room was a nice change of pace and genre for the wandering concert goer. The main room opened up with K-Mac and then Decodon on the decks. For the third set Vinnie Maniscalco and Treyy G would battle it out, and pop off a bunch of confetti tubes. The openers did a good job firing up the crowd for the three headliners to feed off of.

First up for the big name producers was Mayhem. He's a killer producer and live DJ with an ear for whats next in music. More and more songs are being made in collaboration with Mayhem. He and Antiserum have a wildly popular song called "Pakistan", and the crowd went crazy when Mayhem dropped it at Parade of Lasers. Mayhem is a really good at crowd control on the microphone too, he always has the people hyped up.

Next in the booth was Bare, another popular producer. Bare was a bit of a switch up from Mayhem, as Bare is more known for a hard dubstep style and Mayhem has made a name for himself as a trap producer. Although both and very well versed in many genres, and for live sets they both showcase a wide variety of styles. Bare is also very good at pumping up the crowd, he likes to go right out by the front row and really get the people to scream.

Borgeous was the closer for Parade of Lasers, and he was accompanied by a completely face melting laser show. Laser Hands, the alias of the former Flux Pavilion Freeway Tour laser operator, was at the controls for an epic laser experience. Just like in the past the best cues were all saved up for a dazzling display during Borgeous' set. Laser hands is a excellent showman, he gradually goes from simple green beams to start off, then into a full color rainbow eyegasm by the end of the show. Borgeous was solid, he played his hits and some other big songs from the EDM scene. All in all the lasers stole the show, and I think that's just fine.

Parade of Lasers was an incredible event with a great crowd and insane laser visuals. Crowdsurf Concerts went all out and in return the place was full. Parade of Lasers was an amazing night and hopefully it will return next year. Check out this recap video of the night from the awesome videographers at Crowdsurf Concerts.

Dallas based AFK took what was originally a fairly tranquil dubstep track and recreated it into a powerful, womp heavy dubstep track. While maintaining the original melody of the original cut, AFK masterfully inserted his own aesthetic feel into this track - giving it that extra umph that it needed. Undoubtedly a master behind the controls, pick up this free download and get some bragging rights for finding this dude first!

Project 46 & DubVision feat: Donna Lewis - "You & I" - Song of the Day - (12/27/13)

Canadian Project 46 teamed up Dutch duo DubVision and sexy Donna Lewis to create a passionate and powerful dance inducing track. Iron Maiden Makes Millions Off Of Internet Pirates.

Most musicians have very different views when it comes to illegal downloading of their music. The Metal gods, Iron Maiden have used this to their advantage. Using musicmetric, which allows for them to track where their music is most popular with internet pirates, they have focused their subsequent tours based on these findings. Having gathered the information that Iron Maiden is becoming popular in South America they have toured this region heavily, racking in huge profits. One show in Sao Paulo, Brazil netted the band a staggering 2.58 million dollars. Some of the more popular acts should follow this formula and stop worrying so much about where their fans get their music. Is that not the point? Entertaining fans should be the top priority not counting money.

- Rock on...   \../

Led Zeppelin - "Ramble On" - Song of the Day 12/24/13

God damn Jimmy Page's voice is incredible. Raging on like a crazed sex machine, he tears through the soundwaves and overruns the listener with the intensity of a thousand burning suns. Zeppelin at their finest.

Theatre of Delays - "Electric Souls" EP

The music of Theatre of Delays has a rare capacity: it can turn a simple walk in the city with your headphones on into a movie scene. There’s a cinematic touch in every work of this Berlin based producer. Electric Souls is sparkling lemonade turned into music. Fresh, and  with a slightly acid sound, it quenches your mind with a taste of childhood  and tens of tiny electronic bubbles happily  crackling into your ears. Bonsai Symphony encapsulates, in not even 4 minutes, all the movements and the twists you can find in a regular size symphony. A warm retro sound harmonizes a lazy and jazzy melody, while maintaining a definitely electronic and exuberant rhythm. The result is just as refined and surprising as those lovely miniaturized trees can be. The EP also contains remixes by Acid Washed & Superlover that are pretty good in their own right.

Gramatik Side-Project, Exmag, Drops New Full Length Album, "Proportions"

Gramatik's downtempo collaboration, Exmag, has recently dropped their debut full-length album on his label, Lowtemp. This album maintains the consisten Exmag sound that has already been showcased with their other releases and is a great way to build momentum and increase anticipation for Gramatik's New Years Eve run in Chicago. The funk-infused downtempo jams kept us entranced throughout the entire listening. Check out the album and let us know what you think!

Fozzey & VanC - "Wings"

Fozzey & VanC are an Australian duo that we really don't know shit about. Their website is defunct, and all they've elected to volunteer about themselves on Facebook/SoundCloud is this: "We could write you a long ass boring Bio about ourselves but our music pretty much says it all." As for the track,"Wings" had us immediately hooked with incredible vocals and melodic piano, and it continued to sink the teeth in as the track progressed. Lyrics, melody, production, and talent make this a song that is undeniably deserving of making its way onto everyone's music catalog - and possibly even getting put on repeat like what happened here. Can't stop listening to this track right now, check back in tomorrow and see if that has changed.... Possible, although unlikely. Almost wish the track would just never end.

FC Kahuna - "Hayling" - Song of the Day - (12/23/13)

British production duo, FC Kahuna (also stylized as FC/Kahuna), included this track on their 2002 release, Machine Says Yes. "Hayling" is one of 5 singles off the album and was co-written and sung by Hafdis Huld, an Icelandic singer/song-writer, and topped the UK Singles Chart at No. 49. The group disbanded in 2003 and all we have left now is the catalog of wonderful music this duo created throughout their 6-year tenure.

The Doors - "Moonlight Drive" (live) - Song of the Day - 12/22/13

Today's song of the day is one of the first song every written by Jim Morrison - lead singer of The Doors. This was actually the track that he pitched to Ray Manzarek on a California beach. Manzarek immediately fell in love with Jim and convinced him to form a band; it was at that moment The Doors began to take life.

Tea Leaf Green w/Toubab Krewe @ Cervantes' Other Side - Denver, CO (12/30/13) - ENTER TO WIN FREE TICKETS!

Tea Leaf Green
The longer one lives the greater the number of scars and scrapes one accumulates. It’s the same with a band, where the years build up layers one could never have expected when they set out in a van back in the day. So it is with San Francisco’s Tea Leaf Green, whose own journey began as a jam-minded party on legs in the late 1990s and now finds them some of the Bay Area’s most thoughtful, dedicated craftsmen. As sharply carved and musically robust as any rock unit today, TLG have harnessed their surefire live prowess and ability to seize an audience into a bustling, emotionally dense, ear-snagging studio form with In The Wake (in stores May 14), a complete vision that represents the great skill and open-minded invention in this quintet - Trevor Garrod (keys, vocals), Josh Clark (guitar, vocals), Scott Rager (drums), Reed Mathis (bass, vocals) and Cochrane McMillan (percussion) – placing them alongside contemporaries like Delta Spirit, Everest and Dr. Dog in marrying honesty, artistry and grit in music that hums with bruised but unbowed life.

Toubab Krewe
Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories. Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance – free, questing, overflowing with immediate, tangible life. This is the music of Toubab Krewe, the vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular, original, globally switched-on sound.
Toubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita, no doubt picked up during the group’s travels to study and live in Guinea, Ivory Coast and Mali. But what truly differentiates Toubab Krewe from other Statesiders inspired by African music is how they innovate on what they’ve learned instead of simply recreating tradition. Toubab Krewe carves out a new trail honoring the African originators they admire by making something alive and contemporary.

Mountain Standard Time
For Mountain Standard Time, there is one focus: making good, honest music. The organic process of expression—from heart to hands to ears—preserves the integrity of the finished product. While the band spends an exhaustive amount of time crafting and perfecting their material, they don’t pay any mind to the rules and confines of genre. With elements of Bluegrass, Prog Rock, Latin and Americana, attempting to categorize the band can be challenging. MST coined the term “free grass” so that they could stop focusing on labeling their music and stick to what they do best: playing it.MST brands its own style of "Rocky Mountain FreeGrass," blending acoustic guitar and mandolin with keyboards, electric bass, and drums. The members of MST migrated to Colorado from different regions of the country, bringing wildly diverse musical backgrounds and influences along with them. Their paths eventually crossed in Nederland - a small, Colorado mountain town steeped in bluegrass music. Musical relationships were forged through the camaraderie of late-night jam sessions that characterize the music scene of the Front Range. Shortly after meeting, MST grew quickly and performed all over Colorado and across the country, with appearances at Wakarusa Music Festival, 10,000 Lakes Festival, Summer Camp Music Festival, and NedFest, among many others.

Arcade Fire - "Awful Sound" - Song of the Day [12/21/2013]

Indie Rock band Arcade Fire released their widely acclaimed Reflector LP about a month ago. Their best tune on the album Awful Sound is a song that encompasses many different genres. Although obviously based in rock music, there are many elements of downtempo, funk, jazz and slow ballad rock. Starting with a slow, mellow drum beat and bass line, Arcade Fire creates a very eerie vibe. When the vocals come in the song retains it's walking pace but slowly the tone starts to rise. What makes this song very unique is the very intense, frightening buildups that occur after the choruses. Although at first listen it seems to be completely out of place but with repeated listens, we hear that it does fit perfectly and transition flawlessly into the bridge and subsequent verses.

"Imagine the climax of a movie, the moment when the rising tension finally detonates, like a punch in the face.
Now imagine watching the same scene in slow motion. You can recognize every little emotion and every shade, you are drifting into a soft, wistful vision.
That’s the power of Theatre of Delays: emotions in a time paradox.

Ott & The All-Seeing I @ Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom - Denver, CO -- Enter to Win Free Tickets!

Ikonic Sound & Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver, Colorado have teamed up to bring you the opportunity to win some free tickets to this amazing show!

Ott & The All-Seeing I
Ott was doomed to be a teenager in the cultural wasteland that was mid-1980′s provincial England. After a brief period spent wandering aimlessly through the hairsprayed deserts of New Romanticism and poodle-rock he found refuge in the warm, inviting sounds of Scientist, King Tubby, LKJ, and Prince Far-I and the effortless grace of European experimentalists Neu! and Kraftwerk. Spending the early days of his career working as a studio engineer, racking up credits on works by Brian Eno, The Orb, Youth, African Head Charge, Steve Hillage, On-U-Sound, and more, Ott eventually ventured out as an artist, creating and releasing some of the most influential electronic music albums of the time. Ott combined his undeniable mastery as a studio engineer with a fresh creative approach to a variety of styles, developing a sound both relevant and unique. Releasing three albums with Twisted Records, ‘Hallucinogen in Dub’, ‘Blumenkraft’, and ‘Skylon’, and performing a whirlwind of gigs worldwide, he created a growing demand for his works both in the studio and live. The release of his current full length album ‘Mir’ on his own Ottsonic label in 2011 marked the beginning of a new phase. After many tour dates and a handful of festivals, we find ourselves moving into 2013… and Ott & The All-Seeing I. Ott & The All-Seeing I is a live four piece band performing material from ‘Blumenkraft’, ‘Skylon’, ‘Mir’, and new unreleased songs. Featuring Ott (electronics), Naked Nick (vocals, guitar, synths, and percussion), Chris Barker (bass), and Matt White (drums), the band captures all the intricate glory of Ott’s electronic sets, but augments them with a raw power and spontaneity which propels the songs to another level. Naked Nick is responsible for guitars and vocals on many of Ott’s best loved songs such as ‘Adrift in Hilbert Space’, ‘The Aubergine Of The Sun’, and ‘The Queen Of All Everything’. Chris Barker is the other half of Umberloid and has provided bass on Ott, Hallucinogen in Dub, and Sphongle albums. Matt White is a drummer of some 25 years of experience who first played with Ott and Chris Barker in their first band as teenagers way back in the late 1980’s. Together, they are Ott & The All-Seeing I.

Octopus Nebula
Colorado's Octopus Nebula has recently opened up on the scene, impressing audiences far and wide with their new style of music that blends elements of electronic, ambient, downtemps, breakbeat, rock, acid jazz, and ethereal grooves. Originally formed in 2004, the current incarnation coalesced in 2008 and consists of Fleeb Thomas on bass, Robin Bloch on guitar, John Safarik on keys, and Dan Raasch on drums. These musicians have come together not only to inspire the dance floor (which they do on a regular basis), but also to spread positive vibrations through music. The rise of Octopus Nebula has been swift and complete, as was evidenced at the first show they ever played together, a sold-out gig at Colorado's famous Mishawaka Amphitheater with musical icons from across the pond, Shpongle and Ott. In addition to these two major names, Octopus Nebula has shared the stage with such heavy-hitters as the Disco Biscuits, Random Rab, Bluetech, Lotus, David Murphy (of STS9), Ana Sia, Eskmo, Boombox, Signal Path, EOTO, and RJD2.Currently laying out the textured psychedelic grooves for their first album, Octopus Nebula shuns the formulaic in favor of a purely original sound, a gamble that has paid off in the long run for this talented quartet. The music refuses to be classified and, as a result, gives the sense that the members of Octopus Nebula are truly breaking new ground.

Project Aspect
In 2008 I began ProJect Aspect, a new vision in a digital/electronic light. My Aspect is the specifics included within the depths of sound, creating multiple layers to overall provide an unpredictable live performance meant to touch the soul. A lot of emotion goes into writing tracks for me. The biggest opportunity to express my rawest of feelings and lay them all out on the table. I write songs to perform them live. Nothing makes my heart happier than playing live music and connecting with new people. In January 2008 I began pursuing musical creation in a new light. With electronic/hip hop influences ranging all across the galaxy, I Started "ProJect Aspect". A new vision, way of looking at music as a whole, an idea if you will. Computer performance is the backbone of this project and performing 100% Organic, original material is an essential piece in what which makes ProJect Aspect. With a vast array of heavy bass tones, melodic ambience, whompy hyphy crunchy beats, and mashup acapellas, Aspect brings a unique sound to the dance floor that will leave you craving more! -Jay Jaramillo (ProJect Aspect)

Future Simple Project
Future Simple Project is an amalgamation of musical, movement and aerial artists. FSP features audio performers MIRAJA & MIKEY FISHER of the Family Moons Artist Collective / Dubanimals. They are often joined by live violinist Ilya Goldberg, aerial fabric dancers and movement artists MaQi Star, Akayate, Jilly Kat, Lani, Shakti Sunfire, and other special guests. Together this dynamic group weaves a sacred visual soundscape intertwined with pretty melodies, complex rhythms, gripping basslines and mystifying movement.

Blue Stahli - "Down In Flames"

"Three years ago, a young man carved out a miscellany of elements from a host of genres and gave form to a new artistic entity - Blue Stahli. The resulting eponymous debut kicked harder than a mule on bath salts; an engine of catharsis, it was a vessel for the ghosts that gnawed at the man's soul. The exertion required a recovery period, and he crafted two volumes of instrumental soundtrack music as his deeper creative juices recondensed. Now the time has come for Blue Stahli to once more massage his creative meats, draw back the inner veil, and summon the beast within. Arcane energy arcs out from his fingertips to string, key, and mic, and a sophomore album looms up from the abyss: The Devil. Phasing guitar-heavy hellfire, body-trembling beats, and irresistible vocal hooks into an apocalyptic force that splits the sky, the first chapter of The Devil now beckons you forth." The whole album is available: HERE.

Burial - "Come Down To Us" - Song of the Day [12/14/2013]

Burial has said before that his music has been a tribute to the rave culture that he never had a chance to experience until later in his life. Since his debut eponymous LP in 2006, his music has evolved marvelously. With the release of his newest EP Rival Dealer, which can be streamed here, Burial shows us that there are no bounds to how emotional and uplifting music can be.

Come Down To Us, the centerpiece and climax of the EP, is a song that focuses on the idea of self acceptance. Starting off with vocal sample "Excuse me, I'm lost" spoken in a ghostly atmospheric tone layered over subtle raindrops falling and ending with a sample from a very moving speech given by transgender filmmaker Lana Wachowski, Come Down To Us is a spiritual journey. With a very smooth R&B like flow as an undertone, overwhelmingly emotional vocal samples, and a subtle holiday tone as a tether, Burial has created a tune that is in itself a total encompassing metaphysical experience.
