Summer Set Music & Camping Festival Preview

In it's 4th iteration, the Summerset Music and Camping Festival has once again grown in both size and scale with added stages and it's most ambitious line-up yet.  The 3-day festival held in western Wisconsin is just weeks away and as anticipation builds, we thought we'd run through what they have in store.

Now with music on 5 different stages, there is action happening all the time. Last year's upgraded Grove stage may have been the best of the 4.  Now with this year's additon of the Meadow stage, it's anyone's guess as to where our favorite spot will be.  With acts like Purity Ring, Theivery Corp and Lettuce on the new stage, I'm guessing it's already in the running for the top spot.  The Grove stage is not lacking top quality acts either though with Odesza, Lotus, The Weeknd and Tune-Yards all gracing that stage.

The daily schedule came out recently and we've been scrutinizing it daily.  Trying to put together a schedule of our own has been something of a challenge.  With 5 stages and dozens of acts we want to see, being able to teleport would be a wonderful gift for these three days.

The Floozies @ Magic Stick Detroit with Russ Liquid, Filibusta & Special Guest GRiZ (3-1-15) [Review]

This past Sunday, The Magic Stick of Detroit had the pleasure of hosting two Kansas soul brothers, Mark (Drums) and Matt (Guitar and Production) Hill, more commonly known as The Floozies. Doors opened at 8pm and the music promptly began with Filibusta’s live band, which included Troy Probst, Max Pohlmann a.k.a Kaisah (Trumpet) and Mike Fitz a.k.a Goodness Gracious (Guitar). One of the first things that I noticed upon my arrival, was tons of people dancing, which I almost never see so close to doors opening at a show. Not just a handful here and there, but a full floor of dancing shoes the entire night! I went up to the super friendly bar staff to get a drink and met tons of good vibin’ people on their way into the venue. So much energy and love was in the air.

Filibusta kept the music flowing while the melodic harmonies of the horn and guitar danced over top of his grooves. As the set was nearing the end I began to hear excited chatter amongst the crowd about Russ Liquid. This was my first time hearing any of Russ Liquid’s music and, after the set he played, I’m not sure how that is even possible! He had some of the saxiest feels and smoothest transitions I have ever heard, especially while continuously going back and forth between the controls and the horn; a most excellent execution. Russ Liquid connected with the crowd like separated friends at a music festival who reconnected hours later at the most bumpin’ set of the night. His energy never let up and he put the crowd in just the right place for The Floozies to take the stage.

The last time I saw The Floozies perform was during their funkalicious set at the Sherwood Stage of Electric Forest 2014, but hearing them in such an intimate setting was a whole new musical experience. Every note that they played was personal, every smile seemed aimed at you and every dance move that they busted was always right in step with the crowd. This show was one of the most connected shows I have been to.

Speaking of connections, towards the end of the evening The Floozies brought two folks consecutively to the stage. First, they brought back Russ Liquid and his horns to jam it out for a bit longer. The versatility of all of these musicians was definitely both an audibly and visually entertaining performance with Russ Liquid bouncing between saxophone and trumpet and Matt Hill bouncing between controls, guitar and bass. Once Russ Liquid had left the stage after a riveting encore performance, the moment that everyone in the crowd had been talking about happened… Home grown, Detroit favorite GRiZ took the stage with the first band to be signed to his label All Good Records (formerly Liberated Music), The Floozies. The feet seemed to pound harder than the subwoofers as the crowd roared with praise! If you can imagine George Clinton mixed with Prince mixed with the sweet sound of sizzling bacon, that is how magnificent this sound was. That Purple Rain mash-up was particularly dank.

After a long night of grooving, the once strange crowd fizzled out with five times as many friends as they walked in with. I left with new mates, tired feet, a smiling face and a camera full of memories. I would like to thank The Floozies for having me out to cover such a wonderful event. Kaisah’s manager AudisBliss was nice enough to invite me on stage to grab some snaps during the Filibusta set, so a big thanks to him as well. It’s always soul warming to attend such a positively energized show when it’s so cold in the D. You can catch The Floozies March 4 at Cosmic Charlie’s in Lexington, KY next!

The Floozies w/Gloominoti @ Big's Sports Bar - Sioux Falls, SD - 2/20/14 (Review)

Brothers Matt and Mark Hill are the duo that make up The Floozies, a party rocking funk infused electronic dance music group that pumps up the crowd and gets everyone moving throughout their passionate performances. Mark rocks the drums while Matt is the producer and brings on the funk with the strings of his guitar. These brothers have been making waves in the music scene over the past couple years and released their most recent album, Tell Your Mother, on Griz’s lablel – Liberated Music. After seeing them perform live at Electric Forest last year I knew this chance to see them live should not be passed up. Although it would have been sweet to see them in a better venue, they took over Big’s Sports Bar in Sioux Falls, SD on a quiet Thursday night on their way to Lincoln to sold out paint party with Zeds Dead.

Big’s has two main rooms connected by a narrow path with a bar running along it. One with 4 pool tables, video lottery, and darts, while the other side is rigged up for shows. Although the sound isn’t the greatest, it’s respectable for the venue and has gotten progressively better with time.  Direct support for the night was the Sioux Falls based duo Gloominoti. The duo consists of Zach Geier and Kory Parisien and they are a staple group at electronic shows hosted at Big’s Bar. They played a range of tunes but mainly stuck with trap and dubstep tracks throughout their performance. Despite the fire alarm going off right when their set started and the trucks arriving after the place was evacuated, their set was raging and everyone there was really digging what they were laying down.

Once their set concluded and a short intermission was over the Kansas based duo, The Floozies, were poised to take over the stage. The guys rocked out some funky bass lines, guitar beats, and drum breaks throughout their show. The sound these two make on stage is so distinct from other electronic acts out there, it’s only a matter of time before these brothers are getting billed as festival headliners. The head bobbing never stopped as these two kept the tunes funky fresh until they had to shut down the stage. Playing tracks from throughout their catalog the show was a great showcase of what The Floozies are capable of. Unfortunately I don’t know of a soundboard existing for the show, however, lucky for us their music is available for free download on their website. HERE is that link. They’ve also got a shit ton of shows planned in the comings weeks so I would definitely advise checking that schedule out HERE and trying to catch them if the opportunity arises!

The Floozies - "Tell Your Mother" [FREE DOWNLOAD]

The first release on future-funk master Griz's label Liberated Music yesterday, Tell Your Mother by electronic music duo The Floozies is an album that takes a very interesting and appealing turn on the rapidly growing Future-Funk genre. Most artists within the genre mainly use hip-hop as their basis. The funk then builds off that. The Floozies do the reverse. They start with a very funky vibe, through warped vocals and pitch-bending guitar riffs, then the percussion is added for completion. Tell Your Mother has a very offbeat and glitchy style which makes it very different from other Future-Funk releases.

It is clear that The Floozies take a lot of their inspiration in Tell Your Mother from dance music legends Daft Punk. A lot of their tunes have a steady four-to-the-floor kick while also the use of vocoders on the vocals is similar. While these elements are very alike, The Floozies manage to create a more funky vibe while Daft Punk retains their synthpop and house basis.

The composition of Tell Your Mother is very skilled. Songs like Love, Sex, and Fancy Things and One Word retain the lazy hip-hop feel which makes you wanna simply groove out and sway slowly from side to side much to the likes of a lot of Gramatik and Griz tunes; while songs like Tell Your Mother and Indubitably are straight house bangers. These tunes are more entrancing and heavy. The rest of the songs oscillate between both ends of the spectrum; however, every song has it's very unique and attractive funky vibe.

Without a doubt, the most funky and emotional song on the album is Somebody Help Me. Starting off slow with some vinyl scratching and signature pitch-bending guitar riffs, The Floozies could go in any direction with this song. However as soon as the beat drops, it is evident that they decided to take a very heavy turn and layer the slow hip-hop vibe with crushing bass and low frequency synths. When the song transitions perfectly into the groovy hook which contains the famous 'somebody help me' sample from the worldwide disco hit Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees, I was completely captivated.

Something The Floozies have managed to do in this album is something many Future-Funk artists don't seem too hung up on. They seem to flawlessly merge funk with emotion, and this creates a new spectrum within the genre. While the genre is probably the most original and attractive within the EDM world, it lacks warmth and passion.
No longer is the Future-Funk scene going to be only about groovin' out, but also about emotional, introspective thought; this is something that fans would appreciate and embrace.

The Floozies - "Ice Cold"

Dynamic duo, The Floozies, have put out the newest single, "Ice Cold", off their forthcoming album, "Tell Your Mother." "Ice Cold" is one of the more funky electronic songs I have ever heard. The floozies masterfully incorporates glitch style production with the soulful electro-funk scene that GRiZ is pioneering the way for to give us a groovy dance jam that will get you moving - hopefully not "twerking". This song is just too sexy and isn't really anything new for The Floozies, so if you dig this I would definitely check out their SoundCloud for more of their tunes.
