Miley Cyrus' "Jolene" - Song of the Day [7/31/2014]

I may not be a big Miley Cyrus fan, hell I'm not even a small Miley Cyrus fan, but you simply can't argue that the girl has talent.  She has as much singing talent as any other female vocalist in the "pop" category.  Unfortunately it is wasted on songs like "Wrecking Ball".  Now if she could just stop acting like a complete fool, write songs that have a little soul and I may actually appreciate her music.  Until then, I guess her "Backyard Sessions" covers will have to do.

Bassnectar- "Ephemeral" Song of the Day [7/30/14]

Bassnectar is no stranger to throwing down the funk, big time. One of my favorite electronic acts, his new CD doesn't dissapoint. My favorite jam of the new album F.U.N. is everything that is great about Bassnectar. Turn it up and listen to his music take you over.

Cake - "Frank Sinatra" LIVE - Song of the Day - [7/29/14]

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/da/Cake_Fashion_Nugget.jpg

Cake is an awesome alternative grunge rock band that still remains intact today, one of the only bands left from the era. This is a live performance of "Frank Sinatra" the opening track from the album Fashion Nugget performed on Letterman. Cake gained a huge following from their song "The Distance" also from Fashion Nugget and they now have seven full albums each are excellent. You can find tour dates, music downloads, and more at the Official Cake Website.

Zomboy - "Skull 'n' Bones"

Whoa, this new Zomboy track is so hard! "Skull 'n' Bones" is going to be on the new Zomboy album The Outbreak set to release next week on August 4th through Never Say Die Records, pre-order by following the link. There's a little bit of everything in this song, it starts off with a lil trap intro leading into drum and bass and then an all out dubstep drop. Zomboy doesn't mess around, his style is loud and intense robotic glitch dub and that's how we like it!

Downlink - "Tiger" - Song of the Day - [7-28-14]

Downlink is a badass. He's a producer, he's a part of the robot band Destroid, and he runs his own record label called Uplink Audio. This song "Tiger" is a couple years old now but I still rock it out often. "Tiger" is a killer track in the moombahcore style, a sub-genre somewhere in between moombahton and hardcore dubstep. Stay on the up and up with Downlink's label Uplink Audio and follow him on his official facebook page here.

Phoenix - "1901" - Song of the Day (7-26-14)

Back in 2009 Phoenix had one of the catchiest songs of the year with "1901" from their album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. This song is super poppy and happy, as is most of the rest of the album. Go check out more Phoenix music on their official Youtube here and have a good day.

Global Dance Festival @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre [7/18/14-7/20/14] (Review)

Review By:
Justin D'Amico

Last weekend was the 12th annual Global Dance Festival at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. Formerly called Rave on the Rocks, the event has evolved into a huge collective of top electronic artists on three stages. Global Dance Festival was a massive 3 day long bash with big names in all electronic genres.

Red Rocks Amphitheater is an incredible location for both the optical amazement and perfect natural acoustics. The amphitheater's main stage is nestled right in the middle of a wondrous geological rock formation. There are two famous rocks, Ship Rock and Creation Rock, on each side of the rows of seating terraces leading down to the main stage. When coming to Red Rocks there are four different entrances and a number of different parking lots. From some lots you have to hike up a bit to reach the main stage, and from there it's another hike up to the top. There is one small parking lot at the top mostly designated as handicapped parking. At the top of the amphitheater is an open platform with a beautiful view, on clear days you can see the skyline of Denver fifteen miles away. Red Rocks is a place like no other for a show, or even better a festival! The sound is awesome and the sights are epic.

For Global Dance Festival the three stages were set up strategically to not have sound bleed over between the different areas. The main stage was of course the amphitheater, the second stage was located on the top platform of the venue, and a third stage was on a separate lower terrace located off the back side of the top platform. Each stage had its own charm and all three had interesting views of either the foothills or the famous red rocks.

The audio and visual staff for Global Dance Festival was on point the entire weekend with spectacular sound, lasers, and graphics. The laser specialists at Amazing Lasers, in particular Laser Hands, dazzled the crowd with a sick laser formation crossing the stage using both Ship Rock and Creation Rock as a canvas. The live laser show is all created on the fly, so a talented laser operator is key in timing cues with the music. The graphics displays were for the most part controlled by VJ Infinight, he did a great job using images from live camera feeds, turning them into works of art. For every artist VJ Infinight had a number of creative ways to display band logos or other unique images, and have them dance along with the music. Aspects like lasers and graphics cannot be set on auto mode, there are a whole crew of people steadily making adjustments to frame each magical moment in time.

Most memorable performances at Global Dance Festival 2014

Savant

I am a huge fan of Savant, and he never lets his fans down. He makes superb music of every electronic sub-genre, tweaking and morphing glitches into his own perfect sounds. Savant creates more music than pretty much any other producer, and he mixes and masters all on his own too. During his set he had a couple mistakes, but it's to be expected when you are raging as hard as he does on stage. Savant also mentioned that he isn't a huge fan of trap and festival music during his set. Then he showed us how he puts his own personal spin on those styles and slayed. Savant also had a special guest with him, fellow producer Mr. Bill, he was just hanging out enjoying the festival and Colorado. The two didn't end up doing anything together live at Global Dance Festival, but I suspect they will have musical collaborations in the near future. They were probably working on new stuff in the hotel after the show. With how much Savant produces, it wouldn't surprise me.

Destroid

The place was buzzing so hard on Saturday night for Destroid! I had never seen a Destroid show before, just clips online, and I knew I was in for a treat. For this performance Destroid went all out and brought Messinian to join the crew. Messinian led the crowd on the microphone providing a little extra in the hype department. Destroid went above and beyond my expectations with the hardest music all weekend and intense visuals. This was a set to remember and I am already eager to see Destroid again.

Andy C and Armanni Reign

The set by Andy C with Armanni Reign as his MC was totally drum and bass massive. Andy C was pretty much the only artist at the festival who goes with the fast drum and bass beats. Andy C went so hard it was like a mosh pit in the whole amphitheater. The crowd was under Armanni Reign's control, he would ask for noise and it would blare, he would ask for hands up and they would rise. I really enjoy good drum and bass music, it reminds me of Detroit and all the junglists who spin out there. It would be really cool to see more festivals incorporate drum and bass artists in the mix. A good variety of styles makes for a better festival, when everyone is playing trap music it can get dull. Big ups to Andy C and Armanni Reign for throwing down a booming drum and bass set.

It was surreal to attend my first ever concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater and have it be this massive electronic festival with a ton of music I love. Global Dance Festival was a blast, I am so happy I was able to be a part of it. This is one festival everyone who loves electronic dance music must attend at some point in their life. Big thanks to everyone who made these three days so impressive, especially the founders of Global Dance Festival, Ha Hau and Kostas Kouremenos. This weekend was one for the ages, see you all next year at Global Dance Festival 2015.

Umphrey's McGee - "Conduit" (Live 8.17.13 - Chicago) - Song of the Day - 7/25/14

Umphrey's McGee formed in South Bend, Indiana in 1997 but claims Chicago as their home. Tonight they play at the Ravinia in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago. This is gonna be an awesome homecoming show for the boys. Let's get it!

Polica's "Amongster" - Song of the Day [7/24/2014]

With their headlining performance at the 10,000 Sounds Festival Saturday night, I thought it fitting to have today's Song of the Day from Minnesota's own, Polica.  "Amongster" off their debut album "Give you the Ghost" is a personal favorite simply because of its soaring vocals and really captures the bands signature sound.  Their brand of electro-pop-rock is unique and addictive in it's separation from just about anything else out there.  For a chance to see them for free, check out the contest on our Facebook Page.

PrototypeRaptor - "Vaprus"

Here's a brand new funkadelic jam from PrototypeRaptor the 24 year old producer from Norman, Oklahoma. He has dabbled with music production since the age of 13, so he is no noob to the game. Typically PrototypeRaptor creates electro-house, nu-funk, nu-disco, dubstep, and whatever else he feels like rocking out. This track "Vaprus" is definitely in the nu-disco style with a bunch of clever bass slaps and excellent mastering. PrototypeRaptor has a loaded soundcloud page with nearly 100 songs, so go check it out.

The Faint - "Mirror Error" Song of the Day (7-22-14)

For today lets go with The Faint and one of the best jams from their 2008 album Fasciination called "Mirror Error". This band is a hybrid with both hard rock riffs and excellent electronic aspects. The lyrics are intelligent, discussing a number of important philosophical topics from a brilliant perspective. This is also the official video for "Mirror Error" sourced from The Faint's youtube channel. The Faint have a large library of songs and it's all awesome, they don't always have a specific style of genre other than radical and cutting edge. Go follow The Faint on facebook here for more music and tour dates.

Foster The People - "Helena Beat" - Song of the Day - 7-21-14

Foster The People blew up a couple years ago with their massive hit "Pumped Up Kicks" but they have many more great songs. Like this song "Helena Beat" also from the album Torches that dropped back in 2011. The entire Torches album is awesome, not to often anymore do you find a complete album that you can just sit and listen straight through. This is the official video for "Helena Beat" and it sends out a strong message with tough images and scenarios. Foster The People are scheduled to be performing at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on August 6th. Go check out more Foster The People music and tour dates by following them on their official facebook page here.

Knife Party - "Centipede" Song of the Day [7/20/14]

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/70/Knife_Party_Logo.jpg
Knife Party can make music out of some of the weirdest sounds, this I like. Implementing some nature in songs makes for one hell of a tune. Turn it up and learn something...

Wildlight - "Twirl Me" (Pumpkin Remix) - Song of the Day - 7/18/14

Wildlight is the sonic collaboration of Ayla Nereo & David Sugalski, aka, The Polish Ambassador. With a sound that will spark your body into motion and swing your soul into flight, this unlikely pairing of a folk singer/songwriter has yielded a graceful new realm of sonic pleasure. Pumpkin, a Los Angeles based producer and DJ reworked the song and made it sexy as fuck. We threw the original at the bottom, you know, for science.

The Presets - "Girl And The Sea" - Song of the Day [7-17-14]

http://australiangothicindustrialmusic.com/bands/images/The-Presets-album-cover-Blow-Up-jpg.jpg
Check out an absolutely beautiful video for the song "Girl And The Sea" by The Presets. This song tells the mystical tale of a girl raised in the wild and when she grows up she becomes a mermaid. The story is told starting from climax for the first verse as he girl escapes into the sea. The second verse comes back to the beginning talking about the girl as a baby. Each chorus has different lyrics, although the melody used in singing the story is the same. I love The Presets, they make very deep and interesting music. It's really cool to see a music video like this one, it really adds a lot to the song.

Nahko and Medicine for the People - "Budding Trees" - Song of the Day - 7/16/14

Nahko & Medicine for the People converged in the winter of 2008 and consists of Nahko Bear, Hope Medford, Max Ribner, Don Corey, Jeanna McAnally, Aliina Champion & Tim Ribner. With a sound as captivating as theirs it's no wonder they are consistently billed for festivals across the country.

Ghostland Observatory - "Vibrate" - Song of the Day - [7/15/14]

Here's a pure dance song called "Vibrate" by Ghostland Observatory a two man project from Austin, Texas. The band is made up of Aaron Behrens on vocals and sometimes guitar, along with Thomas Ross Turner on the drums or synthesizer. Not your typical band but these two can completely rock the place out. In this video Aaron Behrens shows us some of the sickest dance moves ever seen during a live performance. The audio has been dubbed over using the studio recording of "Vibrate" from the album Paparazzi Lightning released in 2006. Ghostland Observatory have a big library of music and it's very good.

Zeds Dead feat: Memorecks - "Collapse" - Song of the Day - 7/14/14

Wolfgang Gartner - "Illmerica" - Song of the Day (7/13/14)

This is such an amazing music video and a great song too it's "Illmerica" from Wolfgang Gartner. The video is goes deep into history using a political cartoon type of visual to quickly summarize the manifest destiny of the world powers throughout the last few hundred years. "Illmerica" comes from Wolfgang Gartner's first studio album Weekend In America a completely brilliant listen all the way through. Wolfgang Gartner is at most of the big electronic music festivals every year, and I never miss him. He guides the crowd with his hands like a band conductor along with being a champion mix master for his live sets. You can stay on the up and up with Wolfgang Gartner's tour dates by liking him and following along with his official facebook page here.

Broken Bells - "The Angel and the Fool" - Song of the Day [7/12/2014]

Today's Song of the Day comes from Indie Rock duo Broken Bells. They released their latest LP After the Disco earlier this year to widespread acclaim. Although mainly their music rests in the alternative rock genre, they do draw influence from classic dance music and heavier rock. The Angel and the Fool is a song with a very mellow tone. The guitar riffs are slow and stressed while the synthetic beat is punchy and crisp. James Mercer's dark, delicate vocals float seamlessly over the beat creating a very spacey vibe. Definitely one of the most emotional tunes on the LP.

The Polish Ambassador - "Earth Versus the World" - Song of the Day - 7/11/14

Earth's best ambassador has been cranking out hot tune after hot tune for years and this one definitely classifies as a "golden oldie" as far as his catalog is concerned. It's just so good...

Jack White's "Lazaretto" Live at Glastonbury Festival - Song of the Day [7/10/14]

Today is Jack White's Birthday. To celebrate, we give you the live performance of "Lazaretto" from the Glastonbury Music Festival.  The title track to his most recent album, released just a couple weeks ago, sets the tone for what has become Jack's solo sound.  No longer compromising what he wants to do to satisfy band-mates, Jack delivers a funk/rock/punk sound that highlights his insane guitar skills. Never afraid to try something new, Mr. White lays down some of the best "Rock" of our generation.  If you can sit still listening to this, you are a far more relaxed person than I am...

LCD Soundsystem - "North American Scum" - (7-9-14) SOTD

Here's an awesome video for the song "North American Scum" by LCD Soundsystem the experimental rock band that kicked ass from the early 2000's until 2011 when they disbanded. Front man James Murphy is the mastermind of the band having done production, vocals, and more for all of the albums. Every now and then you can catch James Murphy doing DJ sets but just under his own name. Any listeners of the Ron and Fez Show on satellite radio will recognize "North American Scum" as the introduction music bed. LCD Soundsystem created timeless music while they were together, I love all of their albums.

Wildlight - "Conversations Between" - Song of the Day (7-8-14)

This song "Conversations Between" is my favorite track from Hers Was As Thunder the debut album from Wildlight. The band is made up of Ayla Nereo and David Sugalski (The Polish Ambassador). Ayla Nereo is an exquisite vocalist and David Sugalski is a cutting edge producer, together they make music unlike anything else. The vocals are particularly enchanting on "Conversations Between", the use of vocal tones rather than always words being sung is refreshing. Wildlight is even more captivating when performing live, Alya Nereo and David Sugalski are both excellent dancers and they shine in the lime light. You can download all Wildlight music for free on soundcloud. But if you get the chance to go check them out live, you can stay on the up and up with tour dates by liking Wildlight on their official facebook page here.

Mord Fustang "We Are Now Connected" SOTD [7/7/14]

I love Mord Fustang, his style is super catchy and it always makes me happy to jam out with. For the most part Mord Fustang produces his own brand of house and electro-house music. He is hugely into video games and you can tell it influences his musical ideas. On soundcloud you can find portions of Mord Fustang's music, but if you want the full tracks check him out on spotify here.

Bonobo - "Duals" Song of the Day [7/5/2014}

Tropical House artist Bonobo released a new tune from his upcoming EP a few days ago. Duals starts off very similar to Bonobo's other works, especially on his The North Borders LP from last year. With chopped samples and organic percussion, Bonobo creates a very chill vibe. As the kick drum and bassline drop, the tropical, simple mood remains. Duals is a perfect example of the signature crispness in Bonobo's sound. Each instrument has its own unique sound that does not interfere with the sound of the others. And each sound is very elemental and organic, rather than synthetic and digital. This is a must listen for any fans of chilled back electronic music.

Telepopmusik "Sound" - Song of the Day [07/03/2014]

Telepopmusik has been around for quite a while.  Delivering one of my all-time favorite tunes "Breathe" way back in 2001 on their Genetic World album.  "Sound" is the first track to be released of their upcoming album to drop this fall.  The French trio has been playing together since 1998 and their sound has remained relatively consistant, while still growing in complexity and soul.  The video is a bit "artsy" for my taste, but the track is undeniably solid.

I can't wait to see what the rest of this new album has in store.  If "Sound" is any clue, it should be another exceptional effort from these guys.

Virtual Riot - "Earth & Sky"

Here's another huge track from the 19 year old Dubstep, Drumstep, and DnB mastermind Virtual Riot. He is currently in school studying music production, if you ask me he should be teaching that class. Essentially every Virtual Riot song I hear becomes a new favorite. You have to check him out if you haven't already, I swear he will impress you. "Earth & Sky" is available to download for free directly through his soundcloud page , as well as a bunch of other superb Virtual Riot music.

Simian Mobile Disco - "Bad Blood" - Song of the Day - (7/1/14)

There's just something sexy about this Simian Mobile Disco song "Bad Blood". Simian Mobile Disco is a duo, the band is made up of Jas Shaw and James Ford. Typically they create excellent house and techno music, but they definitely go off on crazy tangents in all directions."Bad Blood" is from the second studio album Temporary Pleasure released in the UK in July of 2008. Peep out some more Simian Mobile Disco music for yourself.
