Bass Rising @ Cervantes in Denver, Colorado (6/8/17) [Review]

Thursday nights can be boring, just waiting for the weekend to start, and conserving energy. Not last Thursday, it was Bass Rising an annual event thrown by Rebudz and Reload Productions. This year was maybe the illest addition to the annual throw down. Headlining was Noisia with Dubloadz and a lot of powerful Denver DJs too including Fury, Detrace, TOC, and Finesse. Last Thursday was a ball of energy and the lucky ones in Denver got a huge dose of drum and bass.


For this show Rebudz and Reload put on display an array of lasers and LED panel walls. There were 4 full color lasers and 2 LED walls, one in front of the booth and one behind the booth. The LED panels were mostly used to display the DJ logos for the performers. On the front corners of the booth you could find two lasers, and the other two were hidden on the sides of the big LED wall behind the booth up on stands. Sometimes the lasers would bounce off of the giant disco ball making even more beams to touch. Cervantes was lit proper, but even more so by the talented mixes of all of the performers.

The show got started at 8pm and TOC wasn't going to make it on time, not a problem with all of the talent available in Denver. The homie Finesse tagged in for a killer introduction set. Turns out TOC was in a car accident, nothing major, so he was just running behind. Finesse took the stage and he made it his own. He got into some wonky dub and fired up the people for a night of bass music. Finesse is a badass up and coming producer reppin the Rebudz squad. He is at every show and he knows what is hot, I'm glad he got to showoff a bit for Bass Rising. In the future you will see him get deeper and deeper into the line-up for shows like this.

Around 8:30 TOC made it to Cervantes and he didn't skip a beat. He got into some filthy dub but very smooth on his transitions. A lucky few in the crowd were able to cop his merch, he had fresh shirts and hats to flip. TOC brought his folks out for the show too, and they were some of the coolest people there, I had a conversation with his Dad and he is very supportive of his son. Love to see that, a lot of stigma is placed on the electronic music scene but it is for all ages, and that was definitely a theme for the night. TOC is very high energy on stage he doesn't slow down, steady pace and that was a perfect fit for this night. I like how TOC dances to the drops, he helps you to know when the music is about to change up and when to go ham.

Next up was one of my favorites Detrace, this guy is an exemplary producer with a ton of knowledge. He is rather good at creating a live mix also and always brings some new flame to put on display. Detrace immediately got the place poppin off with melodic builds and inferno drops. His mixes are just brilliant always coming up with a new way to fake you out and that's exciting. He has great dance moves as well, often hopping around to the beat and gently turning the faders because they are hot lava! He changed it up a bit from what I am used to, getting into some dope Trap-step drops. I am always game for a Detrace set, he is awesome and perfectly represents the diversity of Denver electronic music.

It was now time for Fury! He is a master of reading a crowd. Fury has been crushing parties for a minute now, so he always knows exactly what to bust out of the arsenal. Perfect blends of drum and bass with dubstep. Plus he was getting into some video game stuff, coins were coming out of blocks and fireballs were being thrown. Fury is at full mad scientist level when it comes to drum and bass, each performance is completely unique and blunt. Fury just gets right to the point and I love that.

One of the hardest on the Disciple crew came up next, ever heard of Dubloadz? Thought so! He had a busy weekend in Denver also playing Friday night with side project and triple b2b Chode Gang. The trio of Chode Gang consists of three incredible individual producers: Barely Alive, Virtual Riot and Dubloadz. He is so energetic and nutty on stage, not to mention through the decks. He had T-Rex hands, gun fingers, and the hardest bass drops of the night. Cervantes was full of headbangers going hard to the beat provided by Dubloadz for a good hour straight.

To close the night was the highly anticipated Noisia. Definitely enlightening having never seen them before. Martijn van Sonderen was representing the trio and he is remarkable on stage. He did a great job tweaking out the beat making awkward sounds, it was so raunchy. Gotta love a live set with interesting twitches, even with just one of the trio Martijin was quick on the switch and added bonus effects to the beats. For part of the set perfectly catering to the headbangers he got into some metal n bass. The crowd was absolutely riled up by the sounds unleashed by Noisia. Martijin was so happy to be in Denver, and such a nice guy with strong European accent on the mic saying, "I had a really good time, and I hope you did too." To close out Noisia got into a really elite blend of drum and bass, and Prodigy's "Voodoo People." One of the dopest sets I have witnessed in some time, huge love for Junglists.


I was overwhelmed with the energetic music all night, and it was so exciting. This was the most hype Thursday night I can remember in a while. I need to stop forgetting Thursdays, jokes. Great times with the Rebudz squad and Reload Productions, always bringing out the best talents to Denver. Roni Size @ The Black Box in Denver, Colorado (3/11/17) [Review]

Saturday night The Black Box hosted a true legend of electronic music; Roni Size. Coming all the way from Bristol, England to lay it down for the bass addicts of Denver. I have been a fan of Roni Size for decades but have never had the pleasure of seeing him. Now he is back on the scene with a new feel and even longer dread locks! It was an excellent night and the people came out to represent the old school hero of drum and bass.


A lot of changes have been made to The Black Box in it's short existence and it's only getting better. Sub.Mission is completely on top of their game they have established a club with completely peaceful vibes, everyone there is instant friends with everyone else. Both rooms are now equipped with projectors to add extra light beams and mapping. In the lounge there is an eye popping 3D display wall, which is now brought to life by perfectly mapped projection images. Then in The Black Box room there are two projectors and a huge white screen that comes down behind the DJ booth. Almost everything affixed to the walls glows with LEDs in the club, and outside there is even more artwork. The merchandise area has been modified a bit as well in order to create more room for vendors to display their awesome works or art. For this show you had a choice of dazzling gems and glass ware in one of the two vending areas. Then a large array of paintings and drawings in the other section, all of which were extravagant. I didn't notice before but when you enter the men's room the mirror is entirely covered in band stickers. Also there's a dope bright green neon sign in the Black Box room behind the bar that reads, "Let's Get Weird." The most notable change is an adjustment of the speaker configuration, now all of the mains hang from the ceiling and this provides a bit more room for the people to dance. The quality of the sound systems in both the Lounge, and the Black Box room are incomparable to any other club in the city, massive bass and very sharp mids and highs.

 
The Lounge was free for people to walk in and check out, but in order to come into the Black Box you had to purchase a ticket and get a special black light stamp. The DJs in the Lounge did a good job changing it up with some old fashion techno, a bit of bass house, and even a few moombahton drops. It was a good change of pace from the Black Box which was DnB, and Jungle music thumping.

Starting off the night in The Black Box was Zane and Syntax, who did a tag team set for a couple of hours. You could tell they are good friends because they played off each other very well and always helped one another out to get a great sounding mix going. They started off with pretty beats, and slowly got more and more wonky with the bass line. Sort of an outer spacey feel to the set and from time to time. Hosting the evening was Slim_r_i and he kept the room hype. Zane and Syntax had a great back to back section to close out the set, and it went deep into the bass abyss.

Next up was Shoebox, another junglist with mad flavor. He brought out his own MC to add a bit of a Rastafarian feel to the flow. He was on that "Ba ra pa pa pie" type of spit which I enjoy. He kind of reminded me of the announcer from the video game SSX for PS2 when he was on the mic. Shoebox started out with a very trippy introduction with a ton of bass to your face. The more he went on he got some fast snares going and the people followed along with their feet. Parts of Shoebox's set were so deep it felt like you were in a bass submarine. Slim_r_i jumped back on the mic at the end of the set and got into some more fresh freestyles. Slim_r_i was the perfect host for the night. The room really lit up as Slim_r_i introduced the one and only Roni Size.






When Roni Size first appeared on stage everybody knew it and they screamed with joy. His demeanor up there in the lights was so inviting, it was like you were watching an old friend spin for the first time in a long time. Before he got started he made a point to sign a record one of his fans brought from home, creating an invaluable vinyl. Roni Size had such a big smile it was impossible not to get happy with him looking at you. For the most part he stayed super focused on the task at hand, dropping the filthy, dirty, drum and bass. He, unlike a lot of DJs, doesn't use large ear covering headphones but simply a single ear bud in the left ear. Parts of his set were unexpected, his opening drop was Red Hot Chili Peppers, and he rocked out a Smells Like Teen Spirit drop. He got into some naughty speed garage music too, which I absolutely adored.

Most of the time Roni Size was mixing more than one CDJ to create double and sometimes triple drops. Each and every time he did this it was seamless, perfect blends of multiple tracks making it brand new. Slim_r_i was crushing it on the mic for Roni Size too, an honor to have the privilege. Towards the end of his set Roni Size got on the mic and started talking to the crowd a bit he said, "I don't know you guys, but you know me, so lets make friends." It was surreal to get the see such a legend of electronic music come all the way from Bristol, England to perform for a room of Denver drum and bass-aholics. I felt honored to be there and was in awe of the display put forth. Roni Size is naturally in rare form and I feed off of energy like that.

If you still haven't made it down to The Black Box, you must! It's a great atmosphere and they bring out big name musicians who make it hyphy. I have nothing but love for everyone at Sub.Mission they always have the illest underground artists coming through Denver. This was a dream concert seeing one of my all time favorites Roni Size. Make a point to go follow The Black Box on all social media outlets so you can stay on top of the amazing shows they throw constantly. Neckbreaker Tour @ Cervantes Other Side (5/21/16) [Review]

The Neckbreaker Tour made a stop at Cervantes Other Side this past Saturday night. Once again Rebudz and Reload Productions came together to bring an awesome display of electronic music. The line-up included local talent Detrace, Coult45, and DJ Fury, as well as Tempest, and Habstrakt, with Dirty Phonics headlining. The moon was full, the Other Side was nearly sold out, and an energetic squad came out to rage.


The room at Cervantes Other Side is super intimate, there is no barricade in the front row so you are right up to the stage. You can basically reach out and touch the artists if you wanted to it's really cool. Rebudz brought out Surreal Laser to add some extra visuals. They had two lasers installed onto pillars on each side of the DJ booth and when the bass dropped the lasers zapped. Out back is a large smoking area with a wooden second stage structure. Early in the night out on the wooden stage, separate from the Neckbreaker Tour show inside, was a group of Christian rappers preach-styling. No one knows why.

Starting off the night was Detrace an up and coming artist representing Denver. He has direct ties to Rebudz and is a resident at Beta Nightclub. Detrace is a smart live DJ and also a very skilled producer, he got things started with some chill and melodic music and throughout his set he ramped up the hype meter slowly. I like how he puts his live sets together, he is very inventive and mixes clever transitions that blend two songs to create a whole new build up. You have to check him out if you haven't already, dude is ahead of the curve.

DJ Fury took the stage next with a special guest MC Dozha and he immediately got the collective heart-rate thumping with drum and bass music. His set also had plenty of dubstep and drumstep drops too, and MC Dozha added a bit of flavor with some freestyles on the mic. Fury always brings a massive arsenal of music, he has been around the electronic music scene for a long time. He is responsible for a lot of the amazing artists that come to Denver. Fury is a pivotal part in the Reload Productions machine, and he never disappoints. This set was extra dirty and dubby, which worked perfect to get the crowd kickin.

Next up was an impressive producer formerly from Colorado but now out in California, Danny Kim aka Tempest. I was able to chat a bit with Tempest and he's a really nice guy, always willing to talk to fans. I thought he might have gotten his DJ name from the old school Nintendo game, but he told me he had never played it. He makes deep dubstep and he put together a bangin live mix. The room started to really fill up during Tempest's set, and he got them all bouncing. Tempest did a lot of sneaky drops, where he would play the build of one song and then drop a much harder track. One drop that was exemplary united Zomboy and Flosstradamus with both drops playing at the same time. Tempest slayed the crowd and they kept coming back for more. 

Coult45 took the controls and layed down a raunchy set with a trapstep, dubstep, and drum and bass. On select Gravity Fridays Coult45 is another DJ you can find at Beta Nightclub. He got his flow started with music from the new Cookie Monsta EP, and the song "Death Wobl." Coult45 used a lot of the new music I love to create this live set, so I stayed right up front. Some of the loudest bass of the whole night came out of Coult45's mix. Lots of finger guns were shot during this set and I was one of the shooters. Coult45 closed out his set with a drum and bass segment which primed the people for Habstrakt.

A special guest headliner Habstrakt from the Never Say Die Records crew joined the Neckbreaker Tour to show Denver how a true house DJ does it. Habstrakt has been pumping out the house beats for years and he is one of the pioneers of the rather popular bass house genre blowing up right now. Habstrakt accidentally cut the music right at the beginning of his set and he said, "Alright, I just made a big mistake, great way to start the night. I've got the biggest headache since 1972!" He is a comical guy on the microphone, and full of dance moves on stage. Habstrakt likes to jump-shift around on stage to the beat, and he makes it look like so much fun to be a DJ. During his set he made a point to shout out some of the producers that created the music he was mixing, producers like Eptic, DJ Snake, and Trampa all got props. Habstrakt spun in between house, dubstep, and bass house mostly but he covered almost everything. One drop in particular cracked me up, he built up to Zomboy's "Like A Bitch" and then right at the drop switched it up to Enya "Only Time." He then yelled out, "Enya!" It was hilarious to see the reaction of the people. To close his set Habstrakt changed gears and spun into some Moombahcore. The whole set was magnetic you had to get up bop around to the beats.







Dirty Phonics was the featured act on the Neckbreaker Tour and they showed us why they are so elite. The band started out as four guys all adding a little something different to their live sets. Just last year Thomas left the band so now it's down to three Charlie, Pitchin, and Pho. For this night it was two of the three Charlie and Pitchin, and they came just as hard as when it was four guys. Charlie was hopping all over the stage and built up a sweat, he showered himself and most of the front row with bottled water throughout the mix. Pitchin mostly stayed in the booth and kept the beats going hard. This was a bit of a different set than I would have expected involving a lot of genres other than drum and bass. Charlie and Pitchin blended into some dubstep, drumstep, bass house, and even trap. They played a new song of theirs still unreleased which crushed, it was a bass house and dub hybrid. The headbangers were going off for Dirty Phonics especially the girls in the front row. There wasn't much time for an encore but the guys made the people headbang with a metal-step track to close. After their set Charlie and Pitchin stayed around and autographed items for the fans, it's such a cool gesture for artists to come out after performing to meet the people who support them.

The Neckbreaker Tour came through with a rowdy night of hard bass. Cervantes Other Side hasn't been that vivacious in a long time. Denver very well may be the Bass Capital when we show out like that. The lucky ones who get to experience their live performances are dazzled by multiple percussionists and flawless representations of amazingly complicated melodies. The main band members are Roni Size, Reprazent, Dynamite MC, and Onallee. Mr. CAR/\\ACK - "I'm in Love With, Coco"

We've all heard the O.T. Genasis original playing over and over at pregames, the club, and the radio for the past few months. Mr. Carmack recently teamed up with Teeko and J.P.S. to produce their rendition of the popular tune. Can't say this was expected, but out of all the remixes out there, this is certainly one of the most unique versions. Mr. Carmack posted on his Twitter account about the remix saying, "Man... High Maintenance - "Drop It" - Song of the Day - (11-13-14)

Hold on tight at the drop, this one goes extra hard! This is "Drop It" from High Maintenance the DnB junglist from Brighton in Britian. His beats are mean and dark using a lot of minor chords in the melodies. The bass is hard and the pace is fast, this is the type of music I like to listen to in the winter. Whoa, this new Zomboy track is so hard! Lana Del Rey - "West Coast" (Camo & Krooked Remix)

The Drum N Bass duo, Camo & Krooked, released a washed out lush remix they did of pop star Lana Del Rey's recently released West Coast. They start the remix with Lana's vocals slowed down floating over a growing wobbly synth. As the synth fades in, we can feel the buried energy slowly coming alive into a minimal DnB drop. The way Camo & Krooked synthesize the chill vibes of trip-hop and classical Drum N Bass with Lana's soothing, ominous vocals is completely flawless. Every sound complements every other and while this remix is in essence a chill one, it has more energy than a classical EDM tune.

Jay 5ive & Kromestar - "Wishful Thinking" (Om Unit remix) - Song of the Day [01/11/2014] [FREE DOWNLOAD]

Today's Song of the Day comes from an artist who is right now completely tearing up the bass music scene. Om Unit released his Threads LP last year around Halloween to wide critical acclaim, with most electronica fans believing that it was the best bass music album of 2013. With his very unique percussion, dark melodies, constant hip-hop base beat, and slow-fast rhythms, Om Unit develops a whole new spectrum for bass music that is very dissociating and spacey. His most remix is of Jay 5ive & Kromestar's Wishful Thinking. Om unit frequently collaborates with Jay 5ive and Kromestar because they are also bass music artists with a hip-hop background. In this remix, Om Unit starts off with a solid four-to-the-floor kick drum and slowly adds the synths from the original tune. When the beat drops, he throws in his signature otherworldly percussion and the original tune's low frequency synths. As the tune progresses, Om Unit adds more percussion, flawlessly creating a sense of movement better than most slow-fast tunes. With incredible sound system production and dynamic range mastering, Om Unit has taken the original tune and turned it into a very psychedelic bass journey.

Okiru - Golden Age (Prismatic Remix)

Yesterday, Prismatic released his remix of Okiru's Golden Age. Like many other Prismatic songs and remixes, Golden Age is broken down and layered with lush melodies and floating synths. Starting with a sweeping synth and heavily filtered percussion, Prismatic lays the framework for a very uplifting drum n bass tune. During the buildup, he continues the atmospheric nature of the tune; however, as the bass drops, so do the synths. Prismatic completely removes all high frequencies and flawlessly adds a heavy, fuzzy bass-line. Pretty sexy all around, definitely worth adding to your collection.

Zyon Base - "The Wire" - Song of the Day [11/30/2013]

Starting with a very atmospheric synth coupled with a quick hi hat rhythm, today's Song of the Day comes from drum n bass artist Zyon Base. The Wire is a perfect fusion of lush ambient music and heavy drum n bass. Zyon Base does a very good job of layering a steady, quick percussion base with mid frequency warped vocals and high frequency synths. As the song progresses, Zyon Base mixes in a few LFO heavy basslines and bits n pieces of many other crisp sounding instruments. Ambient Drum n Bass is a genre that has not been delved into too much. It's great to see many up and coming artists diving into this genre without much experience.

Om Unit - "The Silence" (feat. Jinadu) & "Goveners Bay" off Threads LP

Jim Coles a.k.a Om Unit released his debut album Threads a few days ago. Hailing from London, this electronic artist has created a brand new spectrum within the dubstep scene. In Threads it is evident that Om Unit has taken most of his inspiration from dubstep and drum 'n' bass legends Mala, Photek, and Skream.

One of the most mesmerizing dubstep tunes I have ever heard is track number 2 on this album. 
Om Unit starts The Silence off with a heavy oscillating bass line, a few floating synths, and some reverb driven percussion. Then the vocals come in from Jinadu, effortlessly gliding over the other instruments. His lyrics are very hypnotic, creating a very introspective mental state. As soon as the vocals start to warp and Om Unit drops in the tribal drum beats, The Silence has completely entranced the listener. Unlike most UK Dubstep songs, The Silence is slower and has a heavy and distinct hip-hop vibe. Om Unit places more emphasis on bass-line oscillation and delayed percussion layered with atmosphereic melodies.

Another song on the album that has completely blown away former bass music conventions is track number 14, Goveners Bay. At 170 BPM, this track has its groundwork in drum 'n' bass. However, it is not as minimal as Photek and not as synth-heavy as Noisia.
Goveners Bay starts off very fast with mid-frequency percussion sounds. Then he creates an extremely enthralling effect by adding high-frequency acid synths and ambient melodies. At 0:45 the bass drops. Not just any bass though. A very low frequency pure sine oscillating bass line. This combination of floating acid synths, repetitive garage style percussion, and very low frequency bass not only creates a very meditative, hypnotic tune but also one of the most skillfully produced dance songs of this age.

These two songs, although marvelous on their own, can in no way describe the album as a whole.
Threads is a bass music album unlike any other. Om Unit has completely gone above and beyond to create a work of art that is more hypnotic than psychedelic trance and more heavy than UK Dubstep.

Noisia - "Stigma" - Song of the Day [10/26/13]

Today's Song of the Day comes from the Drum n Bass trio from the Netherlands, NOISIA. NOISIA distinguishes itself from most EDM artists in the scene because of their amazing production skills. Their usage of side-chaining and compressing leaves their music sounding effortless and each instrument at the perfect listening volume. While their main focus is on Drum n Bass music, they also produce within house, techno, and hip-hop. The song Stigma is by far one of their most hard-hitting Drum n Bass tunes. It starts off with a slow and ominous guitar melody. Then slowly, as the song progresses, the percussion kicks in. The song gets faster and faster until the beat finally drops into a very refined synth heavy section. At 172 BPM, this tune is definitely faster than most EDM songs. If you ever get the chance to see them live, take it. Their shows are one of the most mind-blowing musical experiences.

KOAN Sound & Asa - "Starlite"

KOAN Sound & Asa have released the newest single off their new EP, "Sanctuary" - set for release on 10/22/13 by Inspected Records under exclusive lease to OWSLA, Skrillex's label. "Starlite" is a soothing, melodic drum and bass track that is just plain filthy. The production quality of this track is outstanding from start to finish and I couldn't help but listen to it a couple times in a row the first time I heard it. The violin is paired with incredible layering of percussion and keyboard throughout and this track is honestly incredible. Just listen to it and find out for yourself, I cannot wait for this EP to come out!
