Lxury - "We Do"

Lxury released his debut single just recently. His style can be best described as post acid house and this new song We Do seems to best illustrate this genre. Lxury starts the tune off with a basic house beat but then he adds in a vocal sample and throughout the song he seems to flawlessly pitch bend and tweak the sample to fit the rhythm of the song. He then throws in some sweeping synth melodies before dropping the house drum-line back in. By doing this, he creates a very positive and uplifting groovy tune. A must-listen for any dance music enthusiast.

Katy Perry - "Roar" (Brillz Remix)

Los Angeles based producer, Brillz, took pop phenom Katy Perry's song, "Roar", and retwerked it. In all honesty, I normally don't dig this genre of EDM, but this dude killed it. Brillz took Perry's awesome vocals and reworked a bass heavy rachet beat to make an absolute banger. I just listened to this song like 3 times in a row, I bet you will too. Check this song out and "Like" our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter/SoundCloud to stay up to date with everything on the site and more!

James Blake - "I Never Learnt To Share" - Song Of The Day [9/28/2013]

James Blake is an artist whose music cannot be limited to merely one overarching genre. He has elements of downtempo, ambient, UK dubstep, R&B, house, and hip-hop; but the true feature that differentiates him from other contemporary artists in this scene is the emotion clearly evident in his work. I Never Learnt To Share is one of his most emotional pieces and in my opinion his best. The song starts of with only one line of vocals, and this line is repeated throughout the whole song. James Blake slowly starts adding very fuzzy synths and slow melodies and the emotion of the song builds gently. Eventually the emotion of the song reaches its zenith at a very experimental bass drop and it is obvious that all the introspection comes pouring out heavily.
This song and James Blake's entire eponymous album is a must-listen for any electronic music enthusiast.

Phantogram drops new track "Celebrate Nothing" - Song of the Day [9/26/2013]

The synth-pop duo of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, better known as Phantogram, just released their second new song in as many weeks.  "Celebrate Nothing" dropped this morning, along with an announcement that a new EP is just 4 days away.  The new EP as well as a much anticipated new full length album "Voices" are the first signs of new music from this energetic duo since their 2011 EP "Nightlife".  No official news on the LP release just yet, but I wager to say it isn't all that far off.  There have been teases on their Facebook page on a number of occasions.

Alt-J - "Tessellate" - Song of the Day - [9/24/2013]

English indie-rock band Alt-J dropped their first studio album on the world just last year, generating plenty of buzz. Their track "Fitzpleasure" has seen substantial airplay and was even picked up by Nokia for the Lumina 925 Launch. Today's Song of the Day, "Tessellate" has a more down-tempo melodic feel, which is a perfect way to wrap up an otherwise hectic workday...  Enjoy.

Break Science's New Album, "Seven Bridges", Set For Oct 1st Release; single "Breath of Space" Out Now! [FREE DOWNLOAD]

Seven Bridges, the upcoming album from Break Science, is slated to hit on October 1st 2013 on the Pretty Light Music label.  The album is full of collaborations with some huge names; Redman, Lettuce, Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic) and Citizen Chance just to name a few.  Based on what we've heard, Break Science delivers a record that will appeal to a huge range of tastes.

Official Press Release:
This is the first full-length album for the duo, and it perfectly showcases the range of their creative vision and stylistic evolution. Seven Bridges is going to shake venues and clubs to their core, not only with ultra deep subsonic basslines, but with emotionally powerful lyrics, and a soulful message of evolution, integration, and positivity in the face of hardship. The name of the album is very much aligned with its intention, to "bridge gaps" between the past & present, the present & future, and between influence and imagination.

"Break Science's production skills have evolved exponentially; Seven Bridges is crazy hard hitting and melodically beautiful. The record is a brilliant integration of the diverse genres and styles that have influenced their upward expanding musical architecture on their firmly rooted hip-hop foundation." - Derek Vincent Smith (aka Pretty Lights)

The second single off Seven Bridges is available now as a free download on the Pretty Lights Music website and as a stream - HERE. The track, "Breath of Space", is a beautiful example of the beauty, originality, and diversity that Break Science has come to fuse masterfully.

The first released single, "Who Got It," featuring a collaboration with emcee legend REDMAN, meshes classically crafted hip-hop production with cutting edge electronic techniques and sound design. Since its premiere, the song has been hyping up crowds and growing the anticipation for the album's complete release on October 1st.

Raised and influenced by the rhythm and culture of New York City, Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee fuse generations of the city's rich musical legacy with their own deep-rooted connection to hip-hop heritage. Merging their production styles seamlessly, the duo creates a refreshingly original take on hip-hop, better described as electro hip-hop bass music. The live show transcends audiences’ expectations with Borahm’s seasoned trip-hop/dub/soul vibes on keys, as well as his advanced live production techniques, and Adam's thunderous & flavorful breakbeat style on the drums.

Break Science has been electrifying the festival circuit this year with packed dates across the country, including huge plays at Electric Zoo, Electric Forest, Spring Awakening, Detroit Movement, BUKU, Summer Camp, Bounce, Camp Bisco, Hornings Hideout, Summer Meltdown and KahBang festivals, as well as raising $8,000 for flood victims in Colorado by throwing a show at the last minute when their show at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater with Lotus was cancelled due to flooding. Break Science will also be on tour this fall across the States playing mind moving, body bending after parties while on tour with label mate/founder Pretty Lights.

Noisia & Evol Intent - "The Liquid"

Noisia and Evol Intent come together for this naughty drum and bass track. The type of music that makes you shiver, some of the most despicable sounds arranged. Noisia will be releasing an EP called  "Hyenas / The Liquid" with this and another track called "Hyenas" on October 21st.

Pink Floyd - "Fearless" - Song of the Day - [9/23/13]

Today's song of the day is taking us back to 1971 when Pink Floyd released the album, "Meddle". This album marked a transition in the bands sound as they transitioned from using an 8-track recording system in their previous album, "Atom Heart Mother", to a 16-track recording system for this album. The depth of Pink Floyd's sound that we have all come to love took it's first form with the release of this magnificent album. If you are unfamiliar with the  album, I highly reccomend listening to it all the way through... RIGHT NOW!

DVBBS & Borgeous - "Tsunami" (Stratus Remix) [FREE DOWNLOAD]

A straight club banger. That is the best way to describe the brand new remix Stratus released of DVBBS & Borgeous' Tsunami. Unlike the original, which is more trance-like in nature, containing floating synths and an uplifting vibe; Stratus' version is faster and much more bass-heavy. What is truly unique about his version is that there are many EDM styles layered within. He starts off with a trance melody, then throws in a bass-heavy electro-house beat, and finally ends it with a 808 filled trap beat; then he repeats. This song is definitely a great party song and is much more versatile than other Stratus remixes.

AlunaGeorge - "You Know You Like It" (Tchami Remix) - [FREE DOWNLOAD]

AlunaGeorge's hit "You Know You Like" it has been remixed more times that I could even estimate, but this remix from French producer, Tchami, sticks out from the bunch. Working some melodic synths and some deep house basslines together with the original vocals made a song that complimented the original, yet defined itself in it's own right. Check out this remix and snatch the free download while you can.

The Kooks - "Seaside" - Song of the Day - [9/22/13]

Today's song of the day is the short and melodic track, "Seaside", by British rock band, The Kooks. I wish so much this song was longer than it was, but it is perfect in its current existence - so I can't really complain. Sit back and relax while this song tickles your eardrums.

"Mumford & Sons: 'No Activity for the Foreseeable Future'"

From Rolling Stone: "Mumford & Sons played their last tour date supporting Babel last night in Bonner Springs, Kansas, ending a dramatic year that has included several Grammy wins and bassist Ted Dwane’s health scare – and the band revealed to Rolling Stone that they’re ready for a long break. "There won’t be any Mumford & Sons activities for the foreseeable future following Friday’s show," keyboardist Ben Lovett told us earlier this week.

Exactly how long is the band planning to take off? "We have no idea. We just know we’re going to take a considerable amount of time off and just go back to hanging out and having no commitments or pressure or anything like that. It feels like the last week of school right now, before school holiday when you’re in high school. The atmosphere on the road is one of . . . I think everyone’s excited about being free of schedules."

Back in February, the band told us that learning to play demanding arena sets has been an adjustment. "These shows take a bit more out of us," said Lovett. "We have a bigger responsibility to be in better form. We can’t be dropping the set 20 minutes because Marcus has tired legs." Added Ted Dwane, "We definitely want a little break. We’re going to have a little rest."
It will be the band’s first true down time since breaking through with 2009's Sigh No More. "We’re just going to rest up," Lovett says now. "I don’t think we’ve had actually much time in the process to be with other people and living a life outside of the band. I think that’s what’s in place at the moment, to do very little – especially when it comes to Mumford & Sons." Check out the original article on RollingStone.com

The Orb - "Little Fluffy Clouds" - Song of the Day [9/21/2013]

Today's Song of the Day takes us back... to 1991. Little Fluffy Clouds is a song that many in the electronic industry singlehandedly give credit to the creation and expansion of the genre ambient dance music. With a steady acid house beat, repetitive vocal sampling, floating synth chords, and ambient soundscapes, The Orb has crafted the work of art that is part of the masterpiece album The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld.
The Orb has drawn inspiration from many artists, including Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pink Floyd. Likewise, he has been a source of inspiration for many house artists, trance artists, and psychedelic dance artists today.
I recommend listening to the album as a whole.

The Prophet - "Ordinary Life" (KATFYR Remix)

KATFYR, according to his Facebook, "means cat fire and, like a fiery feline, he adds agility to an inextinguishable trace." Drawing many influences, this drumstep banger has some incredibly melodic passages and brilliant transitions. Definitely check this song out and while you're at it, follow him on SoundCloud to stay up to day with his new tracks when they are released - this track is out September 26th on Section Z Records.

Iron & Wine at First Avenue Minneapolis [9/18/2013] - Review

Wednesday night, Samuel Bean better know as Iron & Wine took the stage to a capacity crowd at First Avenue in Minneapolis.  The show had been listed as "Sold Out" for weeks, but upon arrival at the doors tickets were still available, but obviously not very many.  As a fan of Iron & Wine from a few years back, I had envisioned Bean on stage with his acoustic guitar and that was about it.  Memories of "Such Great Heights" and its simplicity are what had me hooked on his brand of melodic sound.  As Iron & Wine took the stage it was glaringly obvious that things had changed, as a dozen people and instruments found their spots and set up shop.

The big band sound that emanated from the stage was altogether something else.  Three guys on horns, three on strings, three female backup singers, a guy on drums and another on the keys...  It all made for a rich - diverse musical experience.  After a few songs, the lights dimmed and the rest of the band disappeared from the stage leaving Bean, his guitar and a microphone; exactly as I had pictured it.  The (somewhat older) audience sang along to nearly every song, to the point that Bean commented from the stage how cool it sounded coming through his in-ear monitors.

They made the switch from big band to Bean solo a few times, creating a rising and falling tempo to the show.  While solo on stage, the room seemed to shrink.  As fans shouted requests from the floor Bean would respond directly to them.  When a robust "Boy with a Coin" came from the audience Bean's retort had the whole place laughing...  He said "I have played this song for every show for the last fucking seven years. If you eat the same fucking meal for the same seven years, it's time to try something else."

To finish off the evening, Bean returned to the stage for a one song encore, the emotional and quintessential Iron & Wine track "Love Vigilantes".  Bean stood in front of the microphone and said "I'm gonna do one more then send you on your way"...

Sorry for the bump in the middle of the video - security was hassling me.

While we enjoyed the musical stylings of Iron and Wine, just across First Avenue legions of 50-somethings sat inside Target Center suffering through The Eagles.  One of the many requests shouted at the stage was "Hotel California", to which Bean replied, "Just lean your head out the window"... Thankfully, Iron & Wine ended about 20 minutes before The Eagles, allowing most of the crowd to avoid the walking sea of baby boomers.

In whole, it was a great show.  If I had to come up with a complaint it was that when accompanied by the full band, Bean's vocals were at times drowned out.  The big band sound was a welcomed surprise, but if the sacrifice was to override Bean's melodic voice, it wasn't worth it in my opinion.

The 4onthefloor and General B and the Wiz review [9/14/13]

Residing in Eau Claire, WI doesn't offer the large array of musical genres that the twin cities can, that doesn't mean we don't try. Keeping a close eye on who comes through town is fairly easy when the only venue I truly enjoy is the The House of Rock. When The 4onthefloor comes through it's a fairly large ordeal in my books and this time was no different.

General B and the Wiz
This being the fourth time seeing 4onthefloor it had to be special, and they didn't disappoint. Going to the show not knowing who was opening for them is how it always goes. Never being let down before, I would say this was one of the better opening acts. General B and the Wiz introduced themselves in the crowd before they went on stage and mingled with their friends. Not knowing what to expect as they set up their equipment I saw all the musical instruments I enjoy: with guitars, keyboards and sound boards how can you go wrong? Mixing amazing original material with covers that allow for them to truly show their musical talents they set the tone for the rest of the evening. "The Ocean" by Led Zeppelin being the song that definitely got my attention, the crowd knew they were in for a great show. With the ability of the band members to simply look at each other and without missing a beat, create so many wonderful sounds that come together in a fusion of blues and psych rock. They describe it best on their Facebook page, "we have a weird name and play weird music" With a new EP due out this October and closing with their new single "Love You Year Round", they had surprised and gained multiple new fans.

The 4onthefloor
What can be said about 4onthefloor that hasn't been said before. The Minneapolis based quartet have never failed to put on an amazing show. Standing front and center, receiving the sound they have directly off the stage this was the most memorable. Entering the stage they have a presence that demands attention. With four bass drums pounding to the beat, you can't help but feel it in your chest. Breaking a string on his guitar within five minutes Gabriel never missed a beat. Picking up the spare between songs they continued to play one song after the other. They played multiple songs off their newest release, "The Spirit of Minneapolis" , my favorite being, "King of the Jungle". Songs ranging from their first EP to the latest CD you can't help but enjoy every minute of it. The energy the band gives is absorbed by the crowd and returned in a fashion that they refer to as "stomping", with the crowd pounding their feet along with the drums the entire venue erupted with cheers for more.

This being such a small venue the band members come talk to the crowd after the performance, I spoke with multiple members of General B and the Wiz and continued my earlier conversation with the drummer of 4otf about the Vikings inability to draft a proper quarterback. He remembered the encounter from last time they came through town. If anyone gets a chance to see either of these bands don't hesitate for a moment to go. If its a small venue, even better you always have the chance to interact with band member and might even get a few autographs.

Laura Mvula - "She" (Shlohmo Remix) [FREE DOWNLOAD]

Shlohmo does it yet again! The experimental beat-maker just released his remix of Laura Mvula's She only 15 minutes ago. My recommendation is to listen to the original first before delving into this remix.
As soon as the song starts, Laurel Mvula's vocals are warped, chopped, and slowed down. Shlohmo adds a few basic percussion sounds and some low-fi synths. But then he throws his signature bass in, and completely changes the tone of the song. It still has an R&B flow to it, but Shlohmo turns into a very emotional and dark tune.
This L.A. native is completely changing the downtempo electronic scene. Watch for his next L.P. that will be released late 2013 or early 2014. In the meantime, listen to this remix, download it, and place it on repeat.

Madeon- "Finale" Song of the Day [9/18/13]

19 year old Hugo Pierre Leclercq, better known by his stage name Madeon, which is an anagram of his previous stage names, began producing music at the young age of eleven. Receiving fame from his single "Pop Culture" in 2011 Leclercq has continued to wow European theaters with his pop/house sound. Collaborating with Lady Gaga and playing multiple electronic festivals in the United States, Madeon continues to gain popularity. Finale is a perfect mix of bass, synth and a vocal track that does nothing but inspire the people who listen to it. The track begins with a slow intro that instantly rises to an electric/pop loop that perfectly coincides with the inspiring words.

Furthur announces they are taking "a much-needed break" for most of 2014...

News broke yesterday that the Furthur will be on hiatus for the bulk of 2014.  After their 4-day Paradise Waits event in Mexico this coming January, that's it for 2014...  To calm the nerves of their devoted fans, the  former members of The Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, reiterate that this is not the band "breaking up".

Furthur's official announcement...
"After more than four years of heavy, year-round touring, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have decided to put their band Furthur on hiatus in 2014. After the four night Furthur run in Mexico in January, the band will take the rest of 2014 off so that Phil and Bob can focus on their countless solo projects.
Furthur came together in September, 2009, and from its inception was a band Phil and Bob were completely committed to, and still are. In the 18 years since the Grateful Dead stopped being a touring entity, Furthur has proven to be the longest-tenured, and most active band featuring two or more former members of the Grateful Dead. With shows that keep the Dead vibe alive while pushing the musical envelope, well, furthur, this band has brought smiles to hundreds of thousands of fans in the past four years. Most impressive is that this has become a true band, and not just Phil and Bob plus some side players. John Kadlecik (guitar), Jeff Chimenti (keyboards), Joe Russo (drums), and Sunshine Becker and Jeff Pehrson (vocals) have joined the trip to create a band that has become one of the most exciting, honest and inspired touring acts in music today.
What does 2014 hold for Phil and Bob? If their activities outside of Furthur in the past four years are any indication, plenty. Phil’s been playing virtually every night when not on tour with Furthur, whether at his Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA, or on the road with Phil Lesh & Friends. Bob’s been hosting one of the most unique web-based variety shows in history, Weir Here, every Wednesday night when he’s not touring, presented live from his TRI Studios in San Rafael. Additionally, Bob’s been having a blast playing his solo acoustic shows, as well as other gigs and tours with newer arrivals to the party. He plans to keep doing what he’s doing, and more of it.
The last time the word “hiatus” was used in regards to the Grateful Dead world was in 1974, and we all know how much good that break inspired. They returned a year and a half later, stronger than ever, and for another 20 years. Furthur’s not breaking up; they’re simply taking a much-needed break. One way or another, we’ll see you around."
