Doja Cat - Give It Up x FWDSLXSH - Song of the Day - 2/13/2015

Doja Cat is an up-and-coming female rap prodigy who will only continue moving up and up. LA-born and raised, this 19-year old is amazingly young for her impressive talents; she is a strong vocalist as well as rapper and lyricist, all of which she brings to this original melodic track composed by London-based producer FWDSLXSH (pronounced Forward Slash.) The combination of Doja's hair-rasing vocals and FWDSLXSH's euphoric production, in which he utilizes Rihanna's "You Da One" acapella, raising those vocals as well as the bar on the original track, creates a futuristic R&B soul feeling mixed with Doja's fierceness in her flow. She even asks us "Who be the coldest bitch?" I think that's you, Doja. At the very least, her delivery and beat selection certainly doesn't disappoint. Listen and decide for yourself if this is the new princess of the rap game.

Wave Racer - Streamers (Ryan Hemsworth Remix) - Song of the Day [2/22/2014]

Future Bass artist Ryan Hemsworth just released his newest remix a couple days ago. Like many of his older works, this remix of Wave Racer's Streamers is extra lush and super sensual, with a foreground of playfulness. Starting of with the original melody coupled with a fat 808, Ryan Hemsworth sets the tone for a very positive experience. Warping vocals and jukey beats, he manages to express his talent in the most versatile manner we have seen thus far.

Shlohmo & Jeremih - "No More" - Song of the Day [2/15/2014] [FREE DOWNLOAD]

In the spirit of Valentine's Weekend, today's Song of the Day comes from two versatile artists who just recently started collaborating. No More, the most recent work by Shlohmo and Jeremih, is a dark, ominous bass-heavy 4 am come-down tune, with slow vibes and sensual-but-off vocals. Shlohmo starts the tune off with some trippy synth melodies and a low frequency trap bassline. With a mix of classic and exotic percussion, Shlohmo develops a versatile playing field for Jeremih to sing over. When Jeremih's ghostly vocals come in, the dark vibe is enhanced with much more flavor. During the middle of the song, after the hook, Shlohmo does his signature vocal warping where he takes Jeremih's vocals and pitch shifts them up and down to create movement. Overall, No More is a flawless tune, representing the dark facet of R&B. Expect more tunes like this one off Shlohmo and Jeremih's upcoming EP.

BANKS - BRAINS (Produced by Shlohmo)

Up and coming R&B artist BANKS teams up with beat maker king Shlohmo to create an incredibly lush and moving tune. BRAINS is one of the most sensual tunes in the downtempo R&B movement. BANKS' very emotional vocals floats seamlessly over Shlohmo's hip-hop beats. With heavily filtering and fuzzy synths, Shlohmo starts the tune off with a slow but heavy vibe. When BANKS' vocals come in, the vibe continues but now exudes pure emotion. Right before her vocals take us to another dimension, Shlohmo warps BANKS' vocals, turning them into hazy synths we heard in Shlohmo's very famous tune Later. These synths merge perfectly with BANKS' vocals, delineating the strain which her lyrics explain.
BRAINS is a tune that will be the inspiration for many R&B singers and producers in the coming months and years.

Boss Miller - "Power Trip" (Official Video) [FREE DOWNLOAD]

Boss Miller released his latest tune, Power Trip, containing a lush beat layered by very flight synths. Dweezy James starts the beat off with a slow filtered beat; he mixes in Boss Miller's vocals along with a few more percussion arrangements. Boss Miller seems to float perfectly over the beat, providing a very sensual flow and swing to the tune. During the hook and bridge, we fully experience Dweezy James' production skills. Keeping the beat steady, he adds a hypnotic melody and a funky bassline while glitching up the hi hat pretty smoothly. Overall, Power Trip is a great collaboration between these two upcoming artists, providing us with a taste of how sensual hip-hop can truly get.

Burial - "Come Down To Us" - Song of the Day [12/14/2013]

Burial has said before that his music has been a tribute to the rave culture that he never had a chance to experience until later in his life. Since his debut eponymous LP in 2006, his music has evolved marvelously. With the release of his newest EP Rival Dealer, which can be streamed here, Burial shows us that there are no bounds to how emotional and uplifting music can be.

Come Down To Us, the centerpiece and climax of the EP, is a song that focuses on the idea of self acceptance. Starting off with vocal sample "Excuse me, I'm lost" spoken in a ghostly atmospheric tone layered over subtle raindrops falling and ending with a sample from a very moving speech given by transgender filmmaker Lana Wachowski, Come Down To Us is a spiritual journey. With a very smooth R&B like flow as an undertone, overwhelmingly emotional vocal samples, and a subtle holiday tone as a tether, Burial has created a tune that is in itself a total encompassing metaphysical experience.

James Blake - "I Never Learnt To Share" - Song Of The Day [9/28/2013]

James Blake is an artist whose music cannot be limited to merely one overarching genre. He has elements of downtempo, ambient, UK dubstep, R&B, house, and hip-hop; but the true feature that differentiates him from other contemporary artists in this scene is the emotion clearly evident in his work. I Never Learnt To Share is one of his most emotional pieces and in my opinion his best. The song starts of with only one line of vocals, and this line is repeated throughout the whole song. James Blake slowly starts adding very fuzzy synths and slow melodies and the emotion of the song builds gently. Eventually the emotion of the song reaches its zenith at a very experimental bass drop and it is obvious that all the introspection comes pouring out heavily.
This song and James Blake's entire eponymous album is a must-listen for any electronic music enthusiast.
